A coworker and I were at a conference this week in Monterey, CA. We were in our room; I was checking email and she was watching TV when I felt a tremble in the room like a big truck passing by. It wasn't until the next morning that we found out there had been an earthquake in San Jose, CA (roughly 100 miles from where we were). WOW! I survived my first earthquake :)
